A curse on him who begins in gentleness. He shall finish in insipidity and cowardice, and shall never set foot in the great liberating current of Christianity.

I suppose so. Is it also about being too gentle, and seeing our self as “gentle”. Should the judgement of our gentleness (and the other spiritual fruits) be made by others rather than ourselves? Is there a time to be gentle, and a time to refrain from gentleness?
